My guest this week is Dr. Linda Przybyszewski, a historian and associate professor of history at the University of Notre Dame. How I came to know Linda’s work is through her beautiful, NY-Times bestselling book: The Lost Art of Dress: The Women Who Once Made America Stylish. (As someone who loves fashion and a daughter of a mother who enjoyed sewing, this book delighted and taught me a lot.) The Lost Art of Dress (published with Basic in 2014) remains relevant. Linda documents the rise of Dress Doctors in the early 20th century and their demise in the 60s. Dress Doctors, Linda explains, were women working as teachers, writers, retailers, and designers who advised women how to dress well, how to choose clothing which suits us at different times of the day, life stages, and ages.Within our interview, Linda guides us through the thrill of research, dressing well, our heritage, and how to still look (and feel) chic, even when busy and even when working from home.
