The case becomes complicated when Dollar learns that Great Eastern Fidelity had established a trust fund for San Antonio's daughter two years earlier. Working alongside Lieutenant Benjamin, Dollar pieces together the strange circumstances surrounding the murder. San Antonio had called police at six in the morning to report two mysterious men watching his house, but when the patrol car arrived, the men had vanished. Hours later, the cook discovered San Antonio dead in his bedroom, shot twice at close range with a Luger.Dollar's investigation takes an intriguing turn when he meets Edith Randall, San Antonio's daughter, who has just arrived from Philadelphia. The young woman reveals she never knew Mark San Antonio was her father until the insurance company contacted her about his death. She had been living with an aunt under the name Randall, completely unaware of her connection to the infamous racketeer who had spent his final years peacefully painting and listening to classical music.
