An aging king sends his five virtuous knights (Brave, Glad, Kind, Pure, True) on a quest to find a truly "good child" to train at court, valuing goodness above all else. After encountering disappointment, including a spoiled boy named Florimond, the knights search individually and, remarkably, each encounters the same humble boy, Gauvain, witnessing different acts that showcase his bravery, cheerfulness, kindness, purity, and trustworthiness. When they offer Gauvain a place at court, his loving mother declines, valuing her good child at home more than royal favor.
