We open Part 8 of our series by clearing the name of the disciple Thomas. For 2,000 years, the church has called him a doubter, but a closer look at scripture shows a man who was ready to die with Jesus when no one else was. This story sets the stage for Matthew 7:1-6. We take a different theological approach than most: Jesus isn’t telling us to ignore sin (scripture commands us to call out sin in love). Instead, He is warning us against being Judgmental (assessing someone’s value) and Critical (picking at their flaws). We also tackle the difficult passage about “giving dogs what is sacred” and “casting pearls before swine.” We explain that “pearls” aren’t the Gospel—we are supposed to give the Gospel to everyone. The “pearls” are the blessings and covenants of God (like marriage). If you try to offer the blessings of a godly life to those who don’t want God, they will trample the blessings and attack you.
