Originally Aired: July 14, 1953Johnny Dollar #171, "The Shayne Bombing Matter," Johnny Dollar arrives in New York to investigate the death of David Shane, a factory foreman killed by a bomb sent in a package. The victim's brother Charles, who had been working in California, is arrested after Mrs. Shane tells police that David identified the package as coming from Charles before opening it. Lieutenant Will Stevens of homicide can find no motive, noting the brothers were close, but Charles stops cooperating after his lawyer arrives. When Johnny interviews Charles at the city jail, the suspect insists he didn't send the bomb but refuses to elaborate.Johnny visits the hospitalized Mrs. Shane and her daughter Mary, both injured in the blast. The mother is distraught, convinced she made a terrible mistake implicating Charles. The sedated Mary reveals crucial information: David had been making speeches against the Workers Protective Association, and Charles was helping him from California. She insists Charles knows who really sent the bomb but is keeping quiet to protect the family. Mary mentions a lawyer named Wagner who frequently called David, suggesting Johnny may have found the thread that could unravel this deadly conspiracy.
