Fear makes useful work feel like a burden, especially when the master seems harsh. Jesus pictures a king who leaves his servants money to use until he returns, correcting hopes that God's kingdom would appear immediately. The king rewards faithful service with generosity far beyond its earnings, while one servant hides his mina because he misunderstands the king.
