The Ship of Theseus

from Socratic Satsang · host Vinod and Kirstyn Nair

In Greek mythology, Theseus was a great hero, known for slaying the Minotaur and safely returning rescued children to Athens. The Athenians preserved his ship as a memorial to this victory. Timed rolled on so when wooden parts of the ship decayed, they were replaced with new parts one at a time. Years became decades and decades became centuries until eventually, none of the original parts remained. That’s the story. Here are the underlying questions:1.        If every part of the ship has been replaced, is it still the Ship of Theseus ship? 2.        If someone were to collect all the discarded original parts and reassemble them into a ship, which vessel would be the true Ship of Theseus?3.        Is identity made of form? Or parts that make the form? Properties of the form? Or consciousness? Or an idea, a perceived reality? 4.        How is identity constructed or decided?  A conversation between Tulip Joshi, Drake Dyke, Kirstyn Everson, Denise Levin and Vinod Nair.  #Philosophy #VinodNair #Conversations #PersonalGrowth #MentalHealth #Success #SocraticSatsang #Leadership #Socrates #Satsang #EasternPhilosophy #WesternPhilosophy #Stoicism #Hinduism #Existentialism #Metaphysics #Consciousness #PhilosophyPodcast  #Neurodivergence #Autism #livingwithautism #Veterans #Motivation #cancer #love
