The Shipwrecked Romance of Eva and Thomas (1878)

The Loch Ard sank when in struck Mutton Bird Island in a dense fog off of the coast of Australia, close to the end of its voyage. When the public discovered that there were only two survivors, a young man and a young woman of about the same age, and that he had saved her from drowning, the general agreement of the newspaper reading public was that he had won her hand in marriage.
