The "Shocking" Case of Michael Schiller and the Electric Chair that Couldn't Finish the Job. Third Time's a Harm.
from Hitched 2 Homicide · host Kris Calvert and Rob Pottorf
A brutal backyard murder. A courtroom drama. And an electric chair that just wouldn’t finish the job. In 1904, Michael G. Schiller walked into the death chamber at the Ohio State Penitentiary expecting to die once. Instead, his execution became one of the most horrifying and botched electrocutions in Ohio history. Convicted of murdering his wife, Mary Schiller, in Youngstown, Ohio, Schiller was sentenced to death in the state’s electric chair. But when the current was applied, something went terribly wrong. Schiller reportedly revived after the first shock. Then again after the second. It took three jolts of electricity before Michael Schiller was finally pronounced dead, turning his execution into a gruesome chapter in the history of capital punishment, Ohio true crime, and the early use of the electric chair. Kris and Rob dig into the murder of Mary Schiller, the trial of Michael Schiller, and the nightmare inside the Ohio Penitentiary death chamber—where justice was supposed to be swift, but became something far more disturbing. This is the case of Michael Schiller, the man who had to be electrocuted three times.
