The Siege of Jasna Góra 1655 Poland's Last Stand Against the Swedish Deluge

from The Story of Poland: A Nation That Refused to Disappear — Fexingo History · host Fexingo

In November 1655, the Swedish army swept across Poland in what became known as the Potop, or Deluge. King Charles X Gustav had taken Warsaw and Kraków, and most of the Polish nobility had sworn allegiance to him. Only one stronghold held out: the fortified Pauline monastery of Jasna Góra in Częstochowa. This episode tells the story of the thirty-day siege that became a symbol of Polish resistance. We follow Prior Augustyn Kordecki, the monastery's defiant leader, who refused to surrender despite overwhelming odds. With fewer than 300 defenders—monks, local gentry, and a handful of soldiers—he faced a Swedish force of over 3,000 men, including experienced mercenaries and heavy artillery. The defenders had only light cannons and an ancient arquebus they called 'the horned one.' Miraculously, they repelled every assault, from direct bombardment to mining tunnels. The turning point came when the Swedish commander, General Burchard Müller, lost his nerve after a failed storm. The news of Jasna Góra's survival sparked a nationwide uprising against the Swedes. For Poles, this was no coincidence: they believed the Black Madonna of Częstochowa protected the monastery. The siege transformed the shrine into Poland's spiritual fortress, a legacy that endures today. We explore the military details, the legends, and why this small victory changed the course of the war. #JasnaGóra #Częstochowa #Potop #SwedishDeluge #AugustynKordecki #BlackMadonna #Poland #Siege #17thCentury #MilitaryHistory #Catholicism #PaulineMonastery #BurchardMüller #Resistance #History #FexingoHistory #EasternEurope #PolandHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
