He finds some footprints on the floor, a Foot, and a round stump print. He and Watson declare that the wooden-legged man must have been there, and looking out of the window, declare that the walls are too high for him to have worked alone. Watson asks how another person could have gotten in, and Holmes frustratingly responds that he must learn to apply Holmes' methods. After walking through the methods, he declares that the other person must have come through the roof. They go through the hole in the roof and find a trapdoor leading to the roof. They also find a set of tiny footprints, and Watson declares that a child must have helped, and though Holmes disagrees, he doesn't state why yet. Holmes then states that the wooden legged man stepped in creosote. They quickly examine the body before the police arrive, and suggest "some Strychnine-like substance." Holmes explains that it must have been administered by the thorn he found in the man's neck. When the police arrive, the detective declares that he is certain of Thaddeus' guilt. Holmes tries to dissuade the man, but he refuses to see the holes that Holmes points to and arrests Thaddeus on the spot. Holmes, frustrated tells Watson that it is late, and that they must get Miss Morstan home. Watson agrees, and Holmes asks if Watson is up for continuing through the night, and on his consent, Holmes send him to an address to look for a dog called Toby.
