The reason for Sholto's great shock on the night he passed away was that he saw Small's face in the window, meaning that he had escaped from prison; as a guard, Sholto, would have known how long his sentence was. After walking many miles through London, Toby begins to speed up, Holmes and Watson believe that they are now very close to the perpetrators, and prepare their arms. Creosote, now being widely used to preserve wood, confused Toby, and he lead them to a lumber yard, causing Holmes and Watson to erupt in laughter.
