After dropping her off and promising to let her know about any developments, he heads to Pinchin Lane to pick up the hound Toby, following which he heads back to Pondicherry Lodge.Holmes reexamines the footprints of the accomplice and gets Watson to notice how the feet are different to his own; the toes being all spread out on the killers, while his and Watsons are all pressed together. Watson heads downstairs to loose Toby, finds Holmes to be on the roof ready to Climb down like the suspect must have done. Mounting the stairs again, Holmes gets Toby to sniff a creosote soaked handkerchief, and then set out across London, Toby leading the way. While walking, Holmes elaborates more on the suspects, suggesting that they must have been convicts, and Sholto and Morstan their guards. The Convicts must have originally found the treasure, this explains why they set out on a revenge mission against their guards. The reason for Sholto's great shock on the night he passed away was that he saw Small's face in the window, meaning that he had escaped from prison; as a guard, Sholto, would have known how long his sentence was. After walking many miles through London, Toby begins to speed up, Holmes and Watson believe that they are now very close to the perpetrators, and prepare their arms. Creosote, now being widely used to preserve wood, confused Toby, and he lead them to a lumber yard, causing Holmes and Watson to erupt in laughter.
