The SILMARILLION Explained: Forgotten Gods
from AJM Nerdcore Hosted by AJM Nerdcore
Welcome back to my weekly read-through of The Silmarillion! This is episode two in my series where I’m breaking down Tolkien’s incredible but notoriously complex legendarium and making it more approachable for anyone new to his world. Last time we tackled Ainulindalë - the creation of the world through divine music - and today, we’re diving into Valaquenta, the part of The Silmarillion that introduces the Valar and Maiar. Think of it as Middle-earth’s divine cast list, complete with heavenly drama, cosmic crafting, and one very moody Melkor. I’ll start by giving an overview to make sense of the reading, then we’ll go through each of the Valar and their roles - from Manwë’s skies to Ulmo’s seas, Aulë’s craftsmanship, and Nienna’s grief-turned-wisdom. Along the way, we’ll spot connections to The Lord of the Rings and The Rings of Power that bring these ancient myths to life. If you’re curious about Tolkien’s mythology, the origins of Gandalf, or just enjoy hearing stories about cosmic beings arguing over creation, you’re in the right place.
