The Silvertown Explosion of 1917 | Episode 22
from Doomsday: History's Most Dangerous Podcast · host Brad Choma
In 1917, job and housing markets in the UK were really blowing up. On this episode: you will not hear me mispronounce Trinitrotoluene for half an hour, but I’ll probably mispronounce it anyway. You will also hear me describe people losing their heads. Or parts of their heads. Or limbs. Or lives. But definitely bowel control.World War One was a real boom time across Europe, which can be easy to forget – unless you were near Silvertown after the war and your ears won’t stop ringing. This is the story of the single largest explosion to ever occur in the United Kingdom - which is saying a lot. Amazingly, because today’s disaster involved the military, no one heard about it for fifty years. It got a little hushed up for reasons of National Security, which doesn’t bring a lot of comfort to those left in its wake scratching their partial heads. It’s a perfectly gory example of the needs of the many vs the needs of the view in this explosive episode of Doomsday.––––– THANK YOU.
