"The Slothful Professor," part 1/4
from The Bible Provocateur Hosted by The Bible Provocateur
Send us Fan Mail Spiritual laziness is one of the only sins that can quietly ruin a soul while looking “normal” on the outside. We take on the hard idea of the slothful professor: someone who professes Christianity but neglects the very spiritual life that should come with it, and we also talk honestly about true believers who drift into a season of coldness and have to be awakened. Our aim is both surgical and healing, letting Scripture wound where it must so grace can restore what has grown dull. We camp in Hebrews 6:11-12 and press what it means to pursue diligence, perseverance, and full assurance of hope. We talk about why perseverance is not a way to earn salvation but a mark of genuine faith, and why spiritual sloth is “dangerously undetectable” as it cools affection for God, numbs conscience, and makes sin feel ordinary. Then we get practical by naming the means of grace: prayer, faith, humility, charity, grace, Scripture study, obedience, fellowship, and mortifying sin, not as merit but as God’s ordinary instruments for preservation and growth. From there we move to Romans 12:11 and the call to be fervent in spirit while serving the Lord. We examine the telltale shift when spiritual pursuits shrink and secular pursuits take over our schedule, and why isolation often protects sloth. We close with a line that cuts through excuses: there’s no such thing as a “secret Christian” because real faith shows itself in engagement with Christ and his people.
