Gratitude is spoken plainly, and honor is returned in kind. At the feast’s heart, song becomes the bridge between past deeds and present truth.   In this passage from The Odyssey, Book VIII, Odysseus answers Nausicaa’s farewell with a prayer of thanks, acknowledging that she saved his life. Seated beside King Alcinous, he honors the minstrel Demodocus with a choice portion of meat, praising the sacred place of singers among humankind.
