The Soul of Philanthropy

Despite the perception to the contrary, African Americans are philanthropic - in fact, Blacks give more than 8% of their discretionary income to charity, more than any other racial group in America. Blacks donate 25% more of discretionary income than their white counterparts and nearly two-thirds of African American households give formally to charities to the tune of more than $11 billion per year. So why is the Black community perceived as a "taker" of charity rather than "giver"?
