The Spartan Mirage
from David's Gemini Notebook Podcast Collection Hosted by David Weissman
The infamous Spartan chasm was supposed to contain generations of infants rejected for being weak—but archaeologists found no infant remains. That empty cave opens an investigation into the “Spartan Mirage,” the enduring portrait of an austere, perfectly equal society of ruthless warriors, built from biased ancient accounts, Roman-era spectacle, and centuries of repetition. Following Lycodamos, a hypothetical ordinary Spartan boy, from infancy into state education, we encounter affectionate parents, Helot caregivers, household pets, hidden luxuries, military cryptography, privately funded inequality, elite athletic coaching, poetry, dance, and music performed beneath the punishing Greek sun. The result is a more contradictory and deeply human Sparta—and a final question about which equally powerful mirages modern societies may be selling us today.
