right just heard the dumb girls here on the ax of the song called mine tonight we also heard music from the hives black keys and hives of chiefs you're listening to the ax of the xav it's ruta it's all turn it sounds for your head and i have the spindles in the wxav studios right now hello spindles hey ruta thanks for having us of course so please tell us who you are and what instrument you play well we'll start with uh bob over here okay and that's where with me bonnie midnight i play guitar and sing a bunch of songs all right yeah i'm carl caulfield and i play bass and i sing a little bit too all right and my name is duane and i play drums and percussion nice now jeff play guitar sing all this together okay awesome so the spindles you guys have been playing around chicago area for quite some time right so tell us a little bit about how the band got together well duane started uh the band with his brother dwight probably about 20 years ago actually and so they had a incarnation of the band that started and used to play clubs in like the southwest suburbs chicago sometimes and uh i kind of hooked up with these guys i think it's about 20 years already we've been playing together and uh then bobby has been out playing music for 35 years plus and uh he joined along with us carl and i we played before in bands so all of us got together like we've been playing together for more than six years as this group together wow that's a long time so uh would you say this is a good mix have you had other people in the band and the cat came out when does that happen we have with recording we've had yes uh people on our cds okay um but mainly it's been us yeah and we've had like a number of your friends who've kind of pitched in and played with us over the years you know so and this group is the group that's really recorded uh the last cd that we just had that came out this spring it's called wavelength and uh you're gonna play a track from that we're gonna do a couple songs from that live nice so how do you come up with the name actually i was looking at a rhino power pop compilation okay and we're trying to pick the name and i saw a comment saying my brother and i played this song on the spindle all day i said my brother how about the spindles and he said well maybe someone in the room said well if you don't take it i will right away it's ours so i thought okay and it looks great on a shirt but people don't know what a spindle is my goodness google it come on right it's a spindle adapter technically right exactly no it's not some uh it's not some name so yeah i guess i've been playing around chicago for a long time um have you been playing elsewhere like out of state or you skip to many local shows or yeah pretty much so i think it's all chicago and suburbs you know i think each of us have done uh some shows out of town but then that is this group okay i've been playing in this area and you said you have a new record out or did it get released last year oh it's this year this year yeah okay and how many other records have you put out just one before that we're gonna do a song from that too there's an album called past and present that's about seven years ago yeah so we worked on this one so we have those two done and uh actually bob has probably has at least 10 records of his own uh no it's actually 25 albums so you do a lot of your own solo stuff oh yeah i was playing lots of solo solo things for like uh 20 years and found it a lot easier to play uh in this band instead of me doing everything and singing everything for three hours okay so do you have like you know cds out yeah okay cool so i went to you did all right but really when when jeff joined and uh the original music became part of this and then bobby's songs and carl songs it brought us up a notch it's it's separated from what we were doing which was good but mostly covers and the original music has been really great for us um so would you guys have any shows coming out soon yeah we have uh actually bob does something where he hosts a uh an open mic night that's going to be saturday november 1st a place called mudson manor in addison and then we have a show coming up uh the following week after that on saturday november 8th we're playing at a place called shannon stelly in lombard uh we're playing with a band called saddleman that a really great band uh then after that one thing that we have it's being finalized right now but we're gonna probably be our last show of the year is saturday november 22nd at montrose saloon with a band called golden richards so we're gonna probably have those shows for this year yeah i'm going up to montrose uh this friday it's a great venue to me that's like if you're like a total music head music people that's who goes there i would agree you know what i mean like everyone's into music everyone comes to see shows is really into it yeah well a great place i mean i think that place has really yeah been a place for so many local bands totally i had to kind of connect there so it's a cool place have you played there often yeah quite a bit yeah quite a bit that's great we got a shout out to eric gel yes rufa and uh cali and jason and jeff everybody that's there the great people great people so what other venues have you guys played around the chicago or suburban areas there's been martyrs uh oh yeah we played hubby bear several times okay we feel up two weeks ago yeah and uh yes the river walk in chicago true bar and darian bar and darian yeah and over the years you know we played so many places carl uh carl's in a band called the call fields but he also is in a band urban twang so they played many many places and we played chubas we played beat kitchen yeah uh the list goes on and on yeah there's quite a few places we played luckily they keep wanting you back that's always a good thing so nothing around the holidays around christmas well not really well yeah we try to kind of tend to like around that period of time not schedule things just in case we get bombarded with weather he has this kind of unwritten kind of idea that we'll play like spring to fall and then something comes up we'll do it but otherwise we're not really trying to schedule it so that sounds like an experienced musician from playing shows in january february going why are we doing this first year around here for sure yeah you never know it's totally true it's gonna end up with 20 inches of snow somewhere it's bob hybrates in a lot with an older album okay you're being productive you're doing other things um so is this record available on vinyl oh no just on cd and on streaming and download it's on um you can get it on bad camp cd baby apple itunes amazon uh spotify you know youtube all the places pandora it's all over the place and it's on cd it's actually a place called cool cat music i'm located in new jersey they sell it we sell it also so vinyl at some point or just not gonna bother with it is it a surprise you well not really honey but it's a possibility thought about it we did uh we did a vinyl single from our first uh record but that was just on cd to the album itself okay yeah so where can people find you guys on the social media world we have a website thespindlesband.com also facebook page that's primarily what we uh use rudy you were encouraging us to get our instagram of speech okay we're gonna do that we're gonna do that about it's a youtube channel uh about midnight stuff and he has some of our you know some of our performances on there a lot of the solo stuff too okay cool all right so we're gonna play something off of the actual cd because you know physical media is so important right and we hope people are still listening to cds i know i do so you guys will be playing this saturday night at mugs but you said it's an open mic though right yeah but i host that okay i'm a co-host you're a co-host so how does that work do you like you jam with other bands other people just like an open way you know we start off with a couple songs and everybody gets up there and plays whoever signs up just like roll them actually oh yeah call it a fake game hey we play three songs and instead of someone else plays that's okay because there'll be a chance so you guys actually played at the splain theater recently we did were there any music night how did that go it went pretty well yeah we've done that a couple of times uh we've done also the okada so you know it's just part of the thing that they put together uh for that and then you know they you know just a few bands that play so just it's like it was a tuesday night so just a little get together just a short set but it was cool so we guys like on that main stage or is there another room there a speakeasy also it's called bourbon and brass there is that on the main floor it's on the second floor it's on the second floor and uh the splains they both have kind of speakeasies and they have like kind of a cool you know like a secret door with a bookcase that you know kind of that's a cool room that's a very nice place okay so wasn't it some sort of battle the bands yeah well they're called it that but you know we're not overly clear i think the idea is that uh some of the bands have been playing indie yeah nice that they have you know that they'll pick some bands to maybe open for headline shows so you know we haven't heard anything about it yet so we'll find out more information when they give it to us i mean is someone judging you like oh well i don't know about this man i'll give them a tenant or something how does that work yeah exactly you don't know there is a secret and it is i think i think they don't know how it works either because they seem like they have anybody there they were actually busy they had another event going on that night in the main theater so i think a lot of their attention was drawn to that but it is so fun to play there's probably somewhere in the crowd paying attention that we don't know who he is yeah like a secret center well very cool i'll probably be going up there in the summer so that's gonna be playing too cool all right so that's very cool free theater so what did you play when you played your cottage it was the same thing yeah yeah both times okay yeah yeah actually i actually played the main stage once years ago uh in like uh like an every brother's thing that we did but uh that's some years back did that it was very cool yeah i was there in the audience yeah we actually did that yeah we did a show with uh one of the everly brother's sons so it's kind of fun to do so you guys are all musicians obviously like what other instruments do you play i'm actually trying to learn piano actually i've been working on that okay yes i got everything well you know what's cool about that i have to say uh on this on the record that we did the last song is called the best of everything but the guy who's playing piano on it he is the son of a woman in eiffel holloway who is one of the jesse dixon singers that's saying with all time so he lives a blog away from existence here and we met each other and so he's actually showing me something so i'm learning a little bit now okay so all right that's how he plays a new accordion he does here it is awesome and then bob's a multi-australist like uh guitars and bass and some keys some keyboard and i play a cajon as of two days ago do you play guitar puzzle great so a lot of musicians do play a lot of different instruments so that's cool that's very fun so you wanted me to play a clip yeah so yeah well we're thinking about playing this because the next song we're gonna play is related um yeah but being on wxav tonight uh 30 is 32 years ago actually uh one of the bands that we all like and uh we kind of brought us band this band together uh it's the eldest brothers and uh so you know we kind of had a mutual admiration for them and that's kind of like uh something that's a little bit in our music so uh they were on uh the radio on wxav this station right probably the same room 32 years ago uh they did a show it was a sunday and uh so this is a clip do you know what dj was with it's a guy i don't remember who he is you might maybe recognize the voice uh let me get this going here why does this not want to play for me today hmm now that's wait wait wait it's on how come i'm not hearing anything hmm he's three years old wow should we know more about this or ten for you or me second dog years of serious boys third night laundry that must be tough either this guy love this guy jeff janglis he loves billy ray cyrus he's kind of no pictures i don't know why it's true billy cyrus well i never thought i'd get into that sound but the more i hear it really feels to me we're kind of joking you know no he loves billy hates that pal mccartney i hate the beatles does he does he yeah this is a friend or a musician maybe used to be a friend after years this i don't mean he might not be afraid he's a big beetle fan yeah well i think he was gonna tune in because he lives outside like 77 in the last game wonderful perfect i think it was a dress out on the grace oh no this is our party already displayed death of it so for everybody's list their free beer so much jeff so that's that's yeah that's the guys you know rod brian graham actually it's ram's birthday today it's ram love here happy birthday to graham that's really cool thanks for bringing that in so when you guys are playing out i know that you know there's two guitars here do you guys like switch off on playing like lead guitar and some songs like how do you guys work out actually bob is a great lead guitar player and i'm i'm really fumbly with that so uh but actually carl sometimes will play the guitar and then bob and carl switch off on we can switch it up on certain songs yeah a little bit bob's a great basis oh yeah it was a secret he's a great accountant too but when you guys are playing live you play electric right bobby oh yeah yep yep oh we need to be loud like rock and rollers yeah i do and if i'm recording something like when we do some of the records so that i have enough time to make 50 mistakes and correct it and then get it right okay all right so you played a lot of gigs obviously so tell us about like one of your favorite gigs that you've ever played maybe something was great about that night or a venue or just we have really actually good response at montreal saloon i think that there's it's kind of like our home field it feels always a good enthusiastic crowd and uh that's probably ultimately my favorite okay and we did play the lakeview east um arts festival here ago and i really enjoyed that it was beautiful day and we played the river walk and it was pretty cool it's nice when people are walking by and paying attention and giving you positive feedback so somewhere i've been missing a little bit yeah the river walk is just beautiful so that's really cool yeah it's cool eric sitting on all of them but yeah it's not what is the worst game you ever played for whatever reasons maybe it was just a bad night blank that one out of my mind okay fortunate not really to have bad experiences but um not with this band but other bands right yeah i think actually i think we've played fairly well like i don't think we really had a show that went really south yeah but sometimes things are out of your hands yeah that's true the house was so incredibly loud we couldn't even hear our brains really so what's cool i guess i did like that one the depth is there anymore is scary well okay you sold it and then it closed yeah cool all right so did you have you recorded that on a cd or no no we do it sometimes in a show you know when we're doing stuff where we do a mix of covers with our original music yeah and we'll we call ourselves the lemon pusses when we do it you do have a stop on this cd on this record which is a holly song yeah we did we did lift through any window on the first record okay and actually uh william's brother dwight was such a great guitar player and he did such a great version on the guitar of lift through any window so then we did that on our first record and then we thought just to kind of have a parallel to that you know like kind of echo of what we did we did what's that too nice so what are you guys um like also listening to like right now like what's something that you are really into is there something new something oh like i love to listen to this final record all the time like what is it i'm more on the old stuff myself hey well like what oh well we're all big people's fans of course how we just mentioned okay um just yeah with the classic the classic rock basically um all of it really okay it's old stuff um but i'm also kind of a folky at heart so i listen to folk music and my wife does kids music so that's always in the background so i try to listen to a lot but it's a lot of old stuff yes Okay, oldies. Is that it? Oh, wow. We're Neil from Neil Finn fans.
Oh, I see all that great stuff. Yes, he's really sold his stuff. Oh, yeah. And his son, right?
Yeah, I like me to tell you. Bobby, what are you listening to? All kinds of crazy stuff. I really couldn't tell you.
Yeah. Oh, okay. Anyone going to see McCurney? Yep.
Are you? Yeah, I'm going to go see him. Wow. He's sticking out a mortgage.
To be determined. He's going to tell you to see the spindles. Well, fair enough. That's right.
So, let's mention again where you guys are going to be playing. November 1st, you get Mugs and Manor. November 8th, Shannon's Deli playing with Salman. November 22nd, I'm Montrose with Golden Richards.
I'm going to also be here for the second. Okay, that sounds pretty cool. And where can people find you again? Well, spindlesband.com is the website and that has links to all of the pages of Facebook, YouTube, Spotify, Cool Cat Music, Apple, Amazon, iTunes, all of the different streaming services.
Okay, it's on your Instagram page. Oh, cool. It's called Spindles Band Chicago. Sweet.
You definitely need to get more than 37 followers. Come on, people. Follow them right now on Instagram. Yeah, I had that created and I never touched.
So, we'll have to get to work. Wait, it's out there? Yeah. All right, you need to get, like, amateur copywriting.
Are you available, Bruder? I don't think it's 40. Pricey, sorry. Okay, cool.
All right, so check out the band on their website. Go see them play live. Thanks so much for coming out, guys. Making the trip all the way to the south side.
Drown, yes. Free. Free. That's...
Be familiar surroundings. Thanks for having us. All right, don't forget, check these guys out. They're going to be at Montrose Saloon, November 22nd, November 8th, at Chan's Deli.
