The Spiritual Life, Episode 12: Spiritual Communion In this episode of The Spiritual Life, Father Bernard Uttley, O.S.B., continues in line with the past series on prayer by dealing with an act of devotion that is of utmost importance for progress in the spiritual life, namely, the act of Spiritual Communion. In these days of apostasy when there are very few true priests offering the true Mass, many of the Catholic faithful have difficulty attending Mass and receiving the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Fortunately, there is an act of devotion that is called Spiritual Communion where it is possible to gain many of the graces of Holy Communion when receiving the actual Sacrament is impossible for a legitimate reason. The great St. Thomas teaches: “Spiritual Communion consists in an ardent desire of receiving Jesus Christ in the Holy Sacrament and in embracing Him with the same love as if you had actually received Him.” And St. Leonard of Port-Maurice says: “Spiritual Communion is a treasure which enriches the soul with inestimable wealth, and is capable of producing the very same graces as sacramental, and in some instances greater.” And elsewhere, he wrote: “By it many souls have attained to high perfection.” For those serious about their spiritual life and for those unable to receive Holy Communion daily – this subject should be of tremendous consolation and help.
