The St. Augustine Serial Killer (William Darrell Lindsey)

The episode documents the harrowing criminal career of William Darrell Lindsay, St. Augustine’s first and only known serial killer, who preyed upon vulnerable women in Florida and surrounding states during the late twentieth century. Growing up amid profound personal tragedy and severe maternal abuse, Lindsay developed a volatile, violent temper that eventually culminated in a fifteen-year murder spree targeting marginalized individuals, particularly sex workers and drug users frequenting impoverished areas like King Street. Despite a history of domestic violence, arson, and animal cruelty, he evaded detection for years by traveling across state lines and dumping his victims' remains in secluded burrow pits and wooded marshes. His reign of terror finally ended in December 1996 when he was arrested in Asheville, North Carolina, after murdering a local woman named Lucy Rymer, which ultimately led investigators to connect him to multiple killings. Following his extradition to Florida, Lindsay struck a plea deal that spared him the death penalty in exchange for guilty pleas, resulting in a thirty-year prison sentence rather than execution. He ultimately served only four years of that term before dying of cancer in April 2001, leaving behind a dark legacy that permanently scarred the historical fabric of St. Augustine and deeply affected the families of his forgotten victims.
