The Stewart T. Monti Interview.

Stewart T. Monti has lived several lives within one journey—Air Force Major, C-130E pilot, university instructor, poet and now historical-fiction author. Tonight on Vigilantes Radio Live, Coach Dini sits down with Stewart for a story-driven conversation exploring the experiences behind his writing and the connected medieval worlds of Mary and Sir Edward and Hillary and Sir Edward. In Mary and Sir Edward, twelve-year-old Mary finds herself protecting a wounded knight carrying information that could stop a traitor’s plot. With no army and no sword, she must rely on courage, intelligence and quick thinking to survive. A generation later, Hillary and Sir Edward follows Mary’s thirteen-year-old daughter—a gifted horsewoman, chess player and swordswoman confronting a different battle: whether a girl in 12th-century England can step into a role society never intended her to occupy. Together, the stories raise questions that extend far beyond medieval England. What happens when ability collides with expectation? How does one generation’s courage change what becomes possible for the next? And who gets to decide what another person is capable of becoming? Stewart also reflects on growing up in a military family, attending the United States Air Force Academy, flying C-130Es around the world, retiring as a Major, becoming an educator and eventually transforming poetry into an expanding fictional universe. Two generations. Two different battles. One enduring message: Never allow the limits of the world around you to become the limits you place on yourself.
