The Stories We Carry and the Life We Create
from Lessons in Life, Love and Healing · host Glenn S. Cohen
“The past is not a prison. It’s a classroom where the lessonswait for us to claim them.”Every person you meet carries a library of stories. Some are worn and comforting memories of joy, connection, and love. Others are heavier, hidden on a high shelf, rarely opened, yet always felt.Life moves in seasons, times of blooming, times of loss, times when it feels like we’re bracing against storms that never end. In our harder seasons, patterns emerge: the same arguments, the same disappointments, the same quiet ache that something within us is unsettled. These cycles are not random. They are the echoes of impact moments, experiences so emotionally charged they overwhelm our capacity to process them fully. In those moments, our nervous system makes a deal: protect us now, even if it means carrying a burden later.Over time, these unprocessed moments shape our neural pathways, creating automatic ways of reacting, withdrawing, or defending. They influence how we interpret the present, relate to others, and see ourselves. Even when we think we’ve “moved on,” the body remembers. A tone of voice, a disappointed glance, or a subtle rejection can awaken the ghost of an old wound and suddenly we’re responding to the past, not the present. This is neurological wounding. Some wounds live in our conscious memory; others are buried deep in the unconscious, steering our choices without our awareness. Because they live in the body and brain, they feel like truth, even when they’re not.The shift begins when we learn how our inner wiring works, how our nervous system formed, why it reacts as it does, and how we can rewire it. That’s when we stop living as if life is happening to us and start living as if life is happening for us with choice, presence and peace. You can keep following the reflexes of your past, or you can write a new chapter. The moment you work with your wiring instead of against it, you open the door to freedom. So, what’s one old pattern you’re ready to rewrite into a story of strength?
