The Story Behind Pinky Promise: Exploring the Singles Themes and Message with Kikko Mai!

from Talk Of Fame Podcast · host Kylie Montigney

The Talk of Fame Podcast got to chat with Kikko Mai! Kikko Mai is an artist and songwriter from Columbus, Ohio. She writes honest songs about the beautiful and sometimes painfully awkward journey into adulthood, highlighting emotions such as guilt, anxiety, and regret. In 2020, at age fifteen, as a sophomore in high school, she won a statewide songwriting contest called Instaband. The first prize, after being signed to the label Elementary Records, was the recording, production, and release of a five song EP and music video that were released the same year. In 2020 and 2021, Kikko Mai performed individually and with her band at local venues in Columbus such as the Coffman Amphitheater, Skully's Music Diner, the Bogey Inn, and Standard Live. She has also performed at the Ohio Creatives Festival. Her experience includes venues of 400+ people. In 2022, as she was finishing up her senior year of high school, Kikko Mai released her first independent single, “pinky promise”.  In the fall of 2022, she moved to Nashville where she is majoring in songwriting and minoring in music business and Spanish at Belmont University. The same year, she released “my mom’s minivan” about social anxiety and being a homebody before she went to college. In 2023, Kikko released two singles: “her house” and “rendezvous”. She co-wrote “Rendezvous” with songwriter Hayley Lieberman and songwriter/producer Will Carlson. Also, she opened the Vinyl Lounge for JT Loux and Almost A.M. Now in 2024, Kikko continues to write within the Nashville and Columbus music communities, often using Discord for out-of-state writes. This year, she has performed with her band at Nashville venues such as the End and DrkMttr. In March, she opened EXIT/IN for artist and songwriter Walker Burroughs and headliner Adam Paddock. In April, she released a vulnerable single, “I thought maybe”, about feeling used. In July, Kikko released “GOOD GIRL”, co-written with songwriter/producer Aaron Carlson, about a relationship with a four year age gap.  Kikko Mai aims to create a safe space for the girls, the gays, the POC, and anyone that has ever been told that they are weird or that they are too much!
