The story of Mikey Cat: Incarceration in Recovery

from Voices of Recovery · host The Works of Wisdom

In this special episode of Voices of Recovery, we conclude our July “Incarceration in Recovery” series with the unforgettable story of Mikey Cat—a man whose life moved from darkness and despair to hope, freedom, and purpose.Born in New York and raised on Long Island, Mikey was adopted into a loving Sicilian family after his teenage mother made the heart-wrenching decision to give up her children for adoption. Surrounded by care and opportunity, Mikey nevertheless felt the pull of a different world—the allure of riches. Temptation soon gave way to action, and his life of crime began with small thefts, quickly escalating into hard drug use by age twelve. As Mikey’s addiction took root, so did a cycle of incarceration. His teenage years were spent in juvenile corrections, and by his twenties, jails and prisons had become all too familiar. Each burglary brought a fleeting sense of satisfaction, but the void grew deeper, the hunger for more insatiable. Even starting a family couldn’t change his path—Mikey’s disease robbed him of the chance to be the father and husband his family deserved.A turning point came when a violent encounter left him shot and severely disabled. But even that couldn’t steer him away from the shadows. Instead, he sank further into the lifestyle, ultimately orchestrating robberies in hopes of feeding his addiction. His choices led to two major trials and a staggering guilty verdict with a 25-to-50-year sentence—an unimaginable price for a life driven by desperation.Inside prison, Mikey found power and control in dealing drugs behind bars, resigning himself a life of darkness. But God had other plans. In that unlikely setting, an Italian Don recognized something in Mikey and gently planted the seed, that “there’s a better way to live.” Even then, Mikey tried to walk both paths—abstaining from drug use for three years while continuing to deal, never fully stepping into the light. It took the heartbreaking loss of a young friend, Anthony—whose mother Mikey had promised to protect—for the message to finally break through. That promise, and that loss, marked a true crossroads. The pain of Anthony’s death, and the realization of Mikey’s role in it, forced him to confront the reality of addiction and the true need for absolute surrender. In that moment, Mikey’s journey began to transform. Twenty years into his prison sentence, he made the choice to practice a program of complete abstinence—a life of recovery—slowly but steadily moving from darkness toward the light. Nine years later, he walked out of prison a changed man, with little to nothing to his name, but ready to embrace the promises of recovery and freedom.Today, Mikey Cat dedicates his life to service. He returns to jails and institutions—not as a prisoner, but as a messenger of hope. He shares his story, offering encouragement to men still trapped in the cycle he once knew so well. Recovery has given Mikey a new lease on life, and he now lives as a free man; embodying the message that no matter how far we fall, there is always a path to redemption and a promise of a brighter tomorrow. This episode isn’t just about one man—it’s about the chains we all carry, the darkness that closes in, and the astonishing grace that cracks it open. From the shadowed cells of prison—both physical and spiritual—to the blinding light of recovery, this is a journey fueled by pain and lifted by hope.
