Charlie ran a PR of 14:30 in the 5k on grass this year.  Charlie not only did not win the NXR regional, but also his state meet. He didn't let either experience deter his confidence going into the national meet. As he states in this conversation, he was all-in. Last XC race. Nothing to lose.
