if you're listening to this feeling scattered tired or like the year has slipped past you i want you to hear this first nothing has gone wrong let's face it once we leave school no one hands us the instructions to structure our lives anymore there's no bell no clear milestones no automatic next step so feeling stuck isn't something you're doing wrong it's what happens when life gets busy and the path isn't clearly marked this mini-series isn't about fixing you or forcing motivation it's about easing the pressure making sense of the fog and helping you move forward gently without burning out or pretending you have to have it all figured out you don't need answers right now you just need a little space to hear yourself again this is peggy mcknight and welcome to the career pivot accelerator it's late evening you're sitting on the sofa and you're looking at your phone but you aren't really relaxing in the background of your mind there is a list it's the two or three things or the two or hundred things you told yourself you'd get to tonight the things you actually want to do the project that excites you the book on the nightstand the hobby that makes you feel like yourself but as you sit there the gap between wanting to do it and actually moving feels impossible to bridge and then the internal dialogue starts you wonder why you're so disciplined at work or so reliable for everyone else yet you can't seem to show up for these small things that belong only to you you start to feel like you're falling behind in your own life it's as if that's been your reality lately i want to tell you why it isn't a character flaw it's a space problem often the issue isn't that you lack the motivation it's that your mind is experiencing a kind of congestion think of it like a road there is a traffic jam in your head not because the cars are broken but because there is simply no space left for anything to move it's like you're at gridlock you are full of decisions you're full of unfinished conversations and the invisible responsibilities that come with a busy life when your mind is that full it doesn't move forward easily it looks for the nearest exit it looks like relief that's not you being lazy that's your brain trying to protect itself from more noise there's a reason this feels harder than it used to early in our lives growing up structure was handed to us you knew when the day started you knew what was required to pass tests and you knew exactly when you were done there were external rails keeping you on track but as our lives and careers progress those rails disappear now you have to build the track while you're driving the train no one tells you when you've done enough no one hands you the next milestone i call this the structure gap it's the weight of having to decide what to do how to do it and when it's finished all at the same time no wonder the things you care about keep getting pushed to tomorrow this is why so many high capacity people hit a wall at the end of the day by 7 p.m you've already managed a thousand micro decisions you've held things together for your colleagues your family or your community we often treat that evening exhaustion as failure but you wouldn't expect a battery to stay at 100 after 12 hours of heavy use that drop in energy isn't a sign that you're incapable it's just information that your mental room is currently at capacity so instead of asking how do i force myself to be more productive a more useful question is what would help me feel less crowded right now sometimes that means closing the laptop earlier sometimes it means saying no to one more quick request and sometimes it means finding a very small very gentle way to re-enter since we can't always clear our schedules we have to learn how to return to ourselves in the middle of busyness let's take a one minute to do that for now wherever you are just pause take one slow breath in and a longer slow breath out now ask yourself not to fix it just to notice what is one small thing i can return to today not a big goal not a plan to catch up maybe it's just stepping outside for fresh air or just getting up out of your chair or finally sending that one text you've been thinking about just one gentle point of contact with your own life i've created a simple one page visual to help with this it's called the one thing for today it's those moments when life feels too full and you just need a way back in you can find the link for that in the show notes that's enough for today my friend in the next episode we're going to talk about that feeling that life is passing you by and how to slow down that life without falling behind until next time my friend bye for now you
