In October of 1994, Luna takes a wrong turn off a rain-slicked highway in eastern Oregon and ends up at the Wayfarer Motor Lodge — a motel that shouldn't exist. The night clerk is a woman named Esther who never stops smiling. The sunroom annex is warm and bright and full of potted ferns. But the door at the back of the sunroom has a lock on both sides. And the guests in the other rooms never seem to leave. This is a story about a motel that holds its guests the way a spiderweb holds flies — gently, patiently, without malice.
