The Super 8 in Clovis, New Mexico — August 2003

In August 2003, I spent a night at a Super 8 in Clovis, New Mexico, on a cross-country drive I'd rather forget. The clerk was a woman named Margie who wore a name tag and nothing else personal. She handed me a key to room 113, ground floor, ice machine at the end of the hall. The hallway was empty when I checked in, but by midnight I could hear the shuffle of plastic-wrapped feet on the carpet. I don't know who was in the room next door, or why they kept sliding notes under my door. I don't know why the notes said 'You're still here.' I left before sunrise, but I don't think I left alone.
