The Surveyor on Red Clay Road, 1994

from Bound in Black — Fexingo Horror · host Fexingo

In the summer of 1994, a young woman named Ellie took a temporary job at the county assessor's office in Millbrook, Tennessee, filing property cards for a new digital system. One card kept crossing her desk — a quarter-acre parcel on Red Clay Road, tax-exempt since 1945, owner listed only as 'Estate of H. Voss,' no deed on file, no building permit, no survey. The assessor told her not to worry about it, that the card was a ghost. But Ellie was thorough, and she started asking questions. She drove out to Red Clay Road one evening in late August, when the kudzu was thick and the light went orange through the dust. She found the property marker at the end of a dirt track, a pin in the ground, exactly where the card said it would be. And she found something else — something the county had been paying taxes on for fifty years without ever acknowledging. This is the story of what Ellie saw that evening, and why she left her job without giving notice. It's about the gap between what is recorded and what is real, and the slow, careful work of noticing things that were never meant to be found. #FexingoHorror #HorrorPodcast #BoundInBlack #RedClayRoad #MillbrookTennessee #Surveyor #H.Voss #CountyAssessor #PropertyCard #Kudzu #Summer1994 #TaxExempt #Unquiet #Boundary #SurveyPin #Parcel44 #EstateOfHVoss #Luna Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
