In the late summer of 2017, I drove through the Florida panhandle on a stretch of highway that didn't make it onto any map. A detour took me down Parish Road, past a boarded-up bait shop and a church with no name. That's where I met the old man who spoke to the swamp, who told me the water had been rising for years, swallowing sheds and mailboxes and eventually entire houses. He showed me the places where the ground gave way to something dark and patient. And when he pointed across the black water, I saw a light flickering where no light should be.
