from The Teaching Journeys Podcast

The latest episode of The Teaching Journeys Podcast, hosted by Dave Roberts, features Cheryl Sweet, a resilient individual who recounts her life filled with medical challenges. At 19, Cheryl had a near-fatal skiing accident, resulting in multiple undiagnosed fractures. Later, she was diagnosed with Von Willebrand disease and faced numerous other health issues, including gastroparesis, GERDs, celiac disease, and asthma. Despite being given a limited life expectancy, Cheryl has survived over 25 years beyond that prognosis. She attributes her survival to a blend of conventional, functional, and Chinese medicine, coupled with rigorous dietary changes and holistic practices. Cheryl is set to launch her own podcast, The Sweet Awakening, aiming to inspire and educate others dealing with severe chronic illnesses. The episode underscores her journey of resilience, scientific inquiry, and the importance of patient advocacy. Cheryl encourages listeners to never underestimate their ability to overcome life's challenges.Cheryl’s Bio and Contact InformationAt 19 years old, Cheryl Sweet’s life changed forever. On January 31, 2000, a devastating skiing accident left her with undiagnosed cervical spine fractures that permanently altered her nervous system and set the stage for more than two decades in and out of critical care.On her 23rd birthday — September 26, 2003 — Cheryl was officially diagnosed with Von Willebrand Disease, a rare and life-threatening bleeding disorder. Over time, her medical chart expanded into a staggering list of conditions: idiopathic gastroparesis, GERD, IBS, Celiac Disease, severe asthma, and PTSD, as well as spinal stenosis caused by spina bifida occulta and six genetic mutations linked to her father’s dioxin exposure both overseas and stateside.Despite enduring countless biopsies, surgeries, and medical emergencies — including seven knee surgeries, including four knee surgeries in just 14 months, that included bilateral knee replacements in 2024 — Cheryl has exceeded her life expectancy by more than 15 years, continuing to astonish her treatment team with her resilience and deep understanding of the body.Armed with a two-year degree in chemistry and a background in medical technology and first aid, she became her own greatest experiment — blending Western Medicine, Functional Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chiropractic care, Somatic Therapy, Meditation, Chair Yoga, and clean eating to stabilize her body and spirit. Now a yoga instructor, meditation teacher, and Reiki practitioner, Cheryl guides others through their own healing journeys, proving that even in a “critical but stable” state, you can live with purpose, passion, and power. Her story isn’t just about survival — it’s about mastering the science and spirit of staying alive when the world says you shouldn’t be.Connect with Cheryl Sweet:Instagram: @thesweetawakeningEmail: [email protected] to The Sweet Awakening podcast on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and more.To find out more about Dave, go to davidrobertsmsw.com and his author page psychologyprofessorandminister.com
