The Sweetest Thing I Never Had

In 1841, on a small plantation on the island of Runion, a twelve-year-old boy named Edmond Albius did something no botanist in Europe had managed to do profitably: he hand-pollinated a vanilla orchid, using nothing but a sliver of grass and his own thumb, in the few short hours before the flower closed forever. Vanilla had been a prisoner of geography for all of human history, unable to fruit anywhere outside Mexico because only one tiny bee could pollinate it there. Edmond's simple, repeatable gesture severed that flower from its native soil, turning Runion and later Madagascar into the world's vanilla powerhouses, and giving humanity one of its first truly global flavors. Harmonia tells the story of the boy behind that ordinary, universal smell, born into slavery, never rewarded for his discovery, and largely forgotten by the history that his hands quietly reshaped.
