Lucie, a young girl, loses her pocket-handkerchiefs. While searching for them on a hill, she discovers a door leading to a kitchen inside the hill. There, she meets Mrs. Tiggy-winkle, a short, stout washerwoman with prickles. Mrs. Tiggy-winkle shows Lucie various clean clothes belonging to different animals and birds, eventually returning Lucie's handkerchiefs. As they deliver the clothes, the animals are grateful.
