The Tattooed Volunteer: Solving the 1984 Murder of Lorraine Eckles

On a March evening in 1984, 29-year-old registered nurse and mother Lorraine Eckles walked out of a Tillamook, Oregon tavern with a dark-haired stranger—and never returned home to her 4-year-old daughter. For four decades, her murder remained one of the Pacific Northwest’s most agonizing cold cases, even as her daughter grew up to build a statewide advocacy network and kept her mother's name active in police files. Then, in the spring of 2024, a witness at a local preparedness workshop glanced across the room and recognized a faded eagle tattoo on the forearm of a respected 68-year-old emergency volunteer coordinator.
