The Telescope on Whisper Hill

In the late autumn of 1998, Luna drives out to Whisper Hill, a forgotten gravel overlook outside of Clement, Ohio, where a homemade telescope stands bolted to a concrete slab. She goes because of a story from an old high school friend, a story about a man who built the telescope to watch the stars, but who started seeing something else, something that came closer every night. Luna sits on the cold ground, peers through the eyepiece, and finds herself staring at a figure she has seen before, standing motionless at the edge of a cornfield three miles away. She watches, counting breaths, until the figure begins to walk, impossibly fast, directly toward her.
