June 2021. A rundown rest stop on Route 9 outside Blackwood, Maine. I stopped there at 2:17 AM to check my map and buy gas station coffee. The man behind the counter had a tremor in his left hand. He didn't look at me when he said 'You're the tenth one tonight.' There were only nine cars in the lot. He told me about the other nine — truckers, a couple on the run, a woman with a birdcage — all of them gone before sunrise. All of them seen leaving with someone who wasn't there when they arrived.
