The Things We Don’t Say — And How Silence Slowly Breaks Us

from Unspoken Emotions · host Rachel Elimelech

In this episode, Rachel delves into the complexities of silence and its impact on mental health, particularly in the context of Time to Talk Day. Rachel explores why many individuals resort to silence as a survival strategy, highlighting that it often stems from past experiences where speaking up felt dangerous or led to dismissal.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Silence as a Protection Mechanism: Silence is not a personality trait but a survival strategy learned when speaking felt dangerous.  Impact of Unspoken Emotions: Unexpressed feelings do not disappear; they manifest physically and emotionally, leading to issues like tension, anxiety, and burnout.  The Importance of Connection: Humans are not designed to carry burdens in isolation. Genuine connection and being witnessed in our struggles are essential for emotional regulation and healing. Small Steps Toward Expression: Opening up doesn’t require perfect words or grand gestures. It can start with one honest sentence to a safe person, emphasizing that the act of speaking is more important than the content of the message. Valuing Your Voice: Everyone deserves to be known and heard. Time to Talk Day is about recognizing the validity of your feelings and the potential for connection, encouraging individuals to take small steps toward sharing their truths. BEST MOMENTS "Silence is not a personality trait. It's a protection mechanism." "You learned silence because at some point, speaking felt dangerous." "Humans aren't designed to carry everything in isolation. We regulate through connection." "Silence doesn't mean you're coping. It often means you're coping alone." "Talking doesn't mean telling everyone everything... It starts small. One honest sentence." Empowered by Darkness Andrea Medina Hi, I’m Andrea Medina. Though I’m in my early 20s, the history of relational trauma in my family lineage coupled with my own father’s abuse and abandonment, has instilled in me a self-awareness and sensitivity to emotions from a young age. I was born in México and raised in Compton, a community where I didn’t have many mentors or influences that pointed me in the direction of emotional healing work. Still, I went on to publish The Energized Self: A Journey to Interconnected Healing, a book that is half memoir and half conversations with trauma survivors at the age of 22. This same year I began my public speaking journey and my master’s program to become a Marriage and Family Therapist. As I find myself rising to fulfill my soul’s calling today, I am still in the same location where conversations like the ones had in this podcast aren’t common. I’m also faced with a myriad of economic and social challenges that I know listeners will relate to. My goal is that Never Alone Infertility Morgan and Madison Never Alone is a podcast for women navigating infertility, loss, and everything in between. We’re two friends whose paths intertwined during our own walks through infertility, and we understand how isolating and overwhelming the process can be. From the uncertainty of IVF to the heartache of miscarriage and the patience required in moments of waiting, we’re here for you.Join us each week as we have real and raw conversations about the challenges and emotions of walking through infertility and loss – both from our own experiences and speaking with other women. We’re glad you’re here, and hope you feel seen, supported and most of all know that you’re never alone.
