The Things We Inherit That Were Never Ours to Keep

You did not arrive empty. None of us do. We come into the world already receiving, already being shaped by forces that were in motion long before we took our first breath, already inheriting a vast and complex estate of beliefs and fears and patterns and ways of seeing that were handed to us not through any conscious transaction but through the simple, unavoidable fact of belonging to the people we belong to. We inherit the obvious things, the color of our eyes, the shape of our hands, the particular timbre of a laugh that startles us when we hear it in our own voice because it sounds exactly like someone else. But we also inherit the invisible things. The anxiety that runs through a family like a thread through fabric, present in every generation in slightly different forms but recognizable to anyone who knows where to look. The silence around certain subjects that communicates more than any words ever could about what is safe to feel and what must be managed carefully. The particular quality of love that was available in the house you grew up in, generous in some ways and limited in others, and the unconscious conclusions you drew from both the generosity and the limits about what love is and what it costs and what it requires you to become in order to receive it.
