Somewhere east of the Sutter Buttes, on a stretch of California backroad that shouldn't exist, there's a concrete kiosk that glows blue at two in the morning. Luna's friend Andy drove through it once, on his way back from a funeral in Marysville. He told her about the woman in the booth—gray uniform, round glasses, voice like a radio station that died years ago. She didn't ask for money. She asked where he was going. And when he told her, she said something that made him turn around and drive all night. He hasn't been able to sleep in the dark since.
