The Torah explicitly commands one Brachah - Birkat Hamazon, the blessing after eating a meal. From that single command, our rabbis built one of Judaism's most remarkable spiritual practices: blessings before and after eating, before performing mitzvot, upon seeing extraordinary beauty or power in the world, and throughout the ordinary moments of everyday life. They recognized in Birkat Hamazon two enduring principles - live with constant awareness of God's presence, and take nothing for granted. A Brachah takes only a few seconds. But a life filled with Brachot becomes a life shaped by gratitude, awareness, and the constant recognition that God is present in every part of our day. Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law.
