The Track at the Edge of Dead Man's Run

February 17th, just before dawn. I was tracking a buck along Dead Man's Run when I found a blood trail that belonged to no animal I'd ever seen. It led me up the ridge to a hunting stand where the snow had been disturbed by something dragging itself away. The man inside was still alive, but he couldn't tell me what had taken his leg—only that it had been watching the stand for three days, waiting for him to come down. I followed the drag marks to the edge of a ravine, and that's where the tracks stopped being anything I could explain. This is what I saw.
