The Tragic Meeting of Cornelius Hargrave and Vizcaya (1890)

from The Shipwreck Archives · host Shipwreck Archives

The four-masted American schooner the Cornelius Hargrave was only a little over a year old, having been launched in September of 1889 as a collier coal ship. She sailed under the command of her owner, Captain John Allen, but her short career had not been without incident. On her very first voyage, she collided with a capsized vessel near Cape Henry and was forced to put into Norfolk and land some of her cargo due to the damage done. The incident was called out in a meeting of the Northern Maritime Conference held in Copenhagen, as a reason for the International Agreements for Preventing the Dangers of Floating Wrecks. It would be less than a year though before the wreck of the Cornelius Hargrave would prove a navigational hazard herself, but she was not alone. Indeed, those on board her could consider themselves the lucky ones.
