from The Marketing Front Lines · host The Front Lines
Flowdesk is a regulated digital asset trading and technology firm offering liquidity solutions and over-the-counter trading to institutional clients including asset managers, banks, and institutional asset issuers. In a recent episode of The Marketers of Technology, we sat down with Tyler Fleischer, Vice President of Marketing at Flowdesk, to learn how he led a six-to-seven-month brand repositioning for a company that had built its business entirely through word of mouth, with no formal marketing function, before he arrived.Topics Discussed:How Tyler moved from financial media to crypto marketing at The TIE and then to FlowdeskWhy trust is the single most important marketing lever for an institutional finance businessHow Flowdesk grew through word of mouth and leadership networks before any formal brand existedWhy the company's internal and external descriptions of itself were inconsistent before the rebrandThe six-to-seven-month repositioning process: discovery sessions, new website, updated visual identity, and unified messagingWhy Flowdesk wants to appear in AI and LLM search results for institutional crypto trading solutionsHow Tyler operates as the sole marketer inside a company of roughly two hundred peopleWhy employee-led and founder-led content now outperforms branded channel content in B2BHow Flowdesk uses AI for reporting and marketing intelligence, not content creationWhat a holistic PR and comms strategy looks like for a regulated financial institution trying to reach traditional financeGTM & Marketing Lessons:Brand must match commercial reality: When Tyler joined Flowdesk, the company had strong commercial relationships but a brand and visual identity that did not reflect what the business had become. "We had really become a really trustworthy and the go-to partner for token issuers and asset issuers and institutional traders... mainly all through word of mouth," Tyler said. The mismatch between commercial credibility and brand presence was the trigger for the full repositioning.Internal alignment before external positioning: One of the most revealing problems Tyler identified was that employees described Flowdesk differently depending on who you asked. "There is a big problem, even people who weren't as close to the business internally are describing Flowdesk very differently than other people in the company." The website relaunch was as much an internal alignment tool as it was an external marketing play.Trust is not a campaign, it is a system: In institutional finance, clients evaluate counterparties based on proven track record, observed reputation, and whether other institutions they respect are already working with that firm. "You can mess up your reputation in the matter of five minutes while it takes five years to build a good reputation," Tyler said.Employee-led content over branded channels: Tyler sees a clear shift in B2B marketing where buyers prefer to hear directly from founders and employees rather than branded accounts. "Founder-led and employee-led content is crucial and really, really important for driving growth," he said.AI as an intelligence layer, not a content factory: Flowdesk uses AI primarily to build marketing dashboards, analyze what is working, and optimize spend. "The most powerful use case that we're leveraging is building that marketing intelligence layer... AI is really just making the data that we collect as marketers so much more useful and actionable," Tyler said.Earned media as trust infrastructure in finance: Tyler's primary goal heading into 2027 is building a full PR and comms strategy so that Flowdesk appears in the sources traditional finance institutions rely on. // Sponsors: Front Lines - Silicon Valley's leading Podcast Production Studio.
