The Truth Sets You Free, One Confession at a Time (Marriage Unhindered)

Lying can feel like a quick fix for fear—until it becomes a habit that steals peace. On Marriage Unhindered, Doug took a call from Junior in Green Bay, who made a difficult admission. “I grew up lying because it was an easy thing. And not going to confession, well, that made it that much easier.” Junior explained that he often felt judged and just wanted to be accepted. So he slipped into a pattern of telling people what they wanted to hear, whether it was to avoid trouble or to fit in. Then he had a turning point. He started going back to the Sacrament of Reconciliation and saw, with new clarity, that he wasn’t helping anyone, least of all himself. The relief surprised him: the truth didn’t push people away; it let them meet the real him. Doug highlighted the practical side too: “Lying takes a lot of energy because you've got to remember the lie.” One lie needs another like a house of cards, and sooner or later the whole thing collapses.
