The Tunnel Under Maple Street

Luna is lost in the pitch-black tunnel beneath Sycamore Ridge, her lantern dead and her only light a box of matches that keeps running out. The child's cry leads her past a row of iron doors set into the tunnel wall—each one locked, each one cold to the touch. At the far end she finds a room full of grandmother's maps, all marked with X's at every streetlamp in town. One map has a single new X drawn in pencil, at a house on Elm Street. As she traces the line, she hears footsteps behind her in the tunnel—heavy, dragging, coming closer.
