"The Twelve Months" is a fairy tale short story in which Marushka, a kind and beautiful stepdaughter, is repeatedly sent into the frozen wilderness by her cruel stepmother and vain stepsister Holena — first to find violets, then strawberries, then apples, all in the depths of winter. Each impossible errand leads her to a mountaintop fire where the Twelve Months sit in council.
