The Twins Who Shared One Life

from Inspector Story

In 1970s Wales, identical twins June and Jennifer Gibbons refused to speak to anyone except each other. They developed a secret language no one could decode and moved in eerie synchrony—mirroring each other's breathing, blinking, and posture. Doctors called it the most extreme case of twin interdependence ever recorded. As teenagers, the twins began committing synchronized crimes. They were eventually sent to a high-security psychiatric hospital, where Jennifer told June, "One of us has to die so the other can live." In 1993, on the day they were finally released, Jennifer leaned her head on June's shoulder during the car ride out—then died instantly. Doctors labeled it sudden and unexplained. Remarkably, June began speaking normally afterward, living an ordinary life. To this day, no one understands what truly happened between them.
