The Ultimate Goth, Morgoth: Middle-earth's First Age Before The Rings of Power | The Tipsy Exchange
from The Tipsy Exchange | Movies, Mysteries & More Hosted by Berly Land
The Rings of Power is almost here, and Amazon spent how much on it? We looked up that number three separate times. We're still not sure we got it right. So before we all head back to Middle-earth, Berly is giving LA a crash course in the story before the story. You may know the Lord of the Rings movies, but Tolkien's world has four distinct ages, and those films only cover one of them. So Berly goes all the way back to the beginning, to the First Age and the original Dark Lord: Morgoth, the ultimate goth. Before Sauron was a giant flaming eye, he was just Morgoth's right-hand man. We cover a creation story told through song, glowing trees that lit up the world before the sun existed, three dazzling jewels that everyone would kill for (and did), a very creepy uncle with an unsettling interest in Galadriel's hair, and the very first dragon. Along the way there are epic sieges, hidden kingdoms, a tragic romance that makes Game of Thrones look tame, and a final showdown between good and evil. Berly cut her notes down from eight pages to four. LA is still trying to keep all the names straight. There's also plenty of classic Tipsy Exchange sidebar content: LA's moment with Aragorn during our extended edition marathon, Berly's life-size Legolas cutout (yes, it watches over us while we record), and an extended appreciation break for Lee Pace, a.k.a. Thranduil, who we would climb like a tree. Plus, a Pushing Daisies rewatch recommendation, a hunt for a DVD of The Fall that won't cost $50, and a Dracarys joke that really backfired. This week's toast: From Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit: "If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world." Cheers! Tell us what you think! Are you watching The Rings of Power? Tolkien superfans, how did we do? (Please be gentle, we've never read The Silmarillion.) Who's your favorite Middle-earth hottie: Aragorn, Legolas, or Thranduil? Tell us in the comments! Please drink responsibly.
