Steven Gerrard started the year with Villa supporters hopeful he could build on a reasonably positive start as Villa boss, but things soon began to head south. Injuries to Gerrard's key new signings didn't help matters, but he was still underperforming with the squad he had at his disposal.Gerrard and Dean Smith were both employed by Villa's current hierarchy despite having zero experience at the top level of English football.
